Hello again. Today is not only the 11th post in Fancy Friday but it’s also my number 200 blog post. It has taken a couple of years to get here, and hopefully I will be here in another 200 posts 🙂
Todays challenge was to do a manicure inspired by a painting or photo. I am super happy about the results and can’t wait to share it with you. As soon as I saw the challenge I knew what I wanted to do. I will give you a chance to guess yourselves based on a photo before revealing it to you in writing 🙂
Did you guess it? If not I was inspired by Monet’s Waterlilies or Les Nymphéas as it’s called in French. My mom and dad had a poster from Monet’s home in Givenchy of the waterlilies hanging when I was younger and have always loved them. When I was in Paris this spring I had the chance to go to Musée de l’Orangerie where the 8 paintings are displayed. Monet spend 10 years of his life painting them. There are super pretty up close and portray different times of the day. To see them all go check out this link and if you click on the pictures you have the option of zooming in on them to see details.
I was inspired by the photo called “Martin” which means morning. Unfortunately I couldn’t add the picture to the blog post so please check out the link above to see the painting. I used a lot of nail polish for this look and some different techniques to get the effect I wanted. This was my first time truly free handing something and being inspired by a photo and trying to replicate it.
For my base color I started out with one coat of Barry M Blueberry Icecream. I then pulled out Models Own Grape Juice from their Scented line and a pieces of saran wrap. I crumbled up the saran wrap painted on the light purple and dabbed it all over the nail. After letting that dry I took OPI Planks a Lot, one of my favorite purples and did the same only in smaller areas alternating the placement as I went a long.
After letting that dry I used China Glaze First Mate a dark navy and added small ripples at the tip of my nail using a small detailing brush. After letting that dry I picked up another small brush and added oval shapes in different sizes in OPI Mermaids Tears for the leaves of the waterlilies. I made them larger in the front and smaller in the back. Then I took China Glaze White on White and added small flowers on the leaves in different positions, shapes and sizes.
After that was dry I went in with a light pink Nubar Pink Lily and added some pink on some of the flowers leaving some of the white. Second I added light yellow with Revlon Buttercup on some of the white ones, while leaving some white to get three different colors in the waterlilies. I then went in with a tiny bit of Essie Mint Candy Apple on some of the leaves to get a bit of dimension. Finally I took a bit of Cult Nails Enticing a sheer pink and placed that in the water to add a little effect to the dark blue lines.
I chose not to add a topcoat before taking pictures because I wanted to painting effect. Since a painting is not smooth and glossy I didn’t want my nails to be that either. I am super happy about the result and super proud because they turned out just as I had imagined. To see what the other ladies chose as their inspiration click on the blue blob in the bottom 🙂
